Commentary
Marske Church in the North Riding of Yorkshire copied from a drawing by George Cuit (1743-1818). |
Commentary
Since this drawing was collected by the Gott family it has always been included in the series of works which relate to Captain Cook. But recent research has shown this to be an error because the Marske Church depicted in this drawing is in Swaledale near Richmond and not Marske-by-the-sea which is where Captain Cook's father was buried in 1779. Furthermore this drawing is not by George Cuit as the other Cook drawings are, but is a copy of one of his works. |
